Empress Joséphine

Marie-Josèphe Rose TASCHER DE LA PAGERIE

born 1763 in Trois-Ilets, Martinique

died 1814 May 2nd in Malmaison

Passionately in love with the beautifull Creole, Bonaparte married her 1769 March 9th. At first, this pretty aristocrat didn't believe in the ascent of her husband. Her casual and frivolous behaviour proved that she was far from thinking of the fabulous title of Empress for herself.

Nevertheless, her glory recoiled on all her family : her son became Viceroy of Italy, her daughter – married with Louis Bonaparte – became Queen of Holland and the mother of the Emperor Napoléon III.

In spite of her husband's love she was repudiated. But Napoléon could never forget her, corresponding with her until her death. He tied his clock with a braid of the Empress's black hair…

Les Etains du Prince represent her at the summit of her beauty.
