The corps - Gendarmerie Nationale - is one of the most ancient French institutions. Inheritor of the Companies of Provost Marshals, it took 1720 the name of Mounted Constabulary. 1791 it became - Gendarmerie Nationale -, ensuring public safety all over the national territory, keeping peace and carrying out the laws of the Republic.
