Bonaparte, a practical man who was himself a gunner, was the forst general to be concerned about inconveniences and additional tiredness caused by handling the artillery. During the year VIII he created the battalions of the Artillery Services composed of car-soldiers, despising danger with quiet heart. These unrecognized but valorous soldiers are reperesented riding the two bearing horses of the carriage. The forecarriage was drawn by four horses, but they coud be six if necessary ( higher speed required or hilly ground conditions). All parts of this carriage are as light as possible in order to optimize quick movement of the cannon.
