NAPOLEON TAKES LEAVE OF HIS SOLDIERS IN FONTAINEBLEAU

NAPOLEON TAKES LEAVE OF HIS SOLDIERS IN FONTAINEBLEAU

Abandoned as well by his family as by his marshals, Napoleon is constrained to sign his abdication in the castle of Fontainebleau.

In despair he tries to poison himself but fails in suicide.
On April 20th 1814 at noon in the castle-yard his faithful “grognards” are gathered, sadness grasping them by the throat.

“ For twenty years, Napoleon says, you have always been besides me on the way to glory and honour ... Farewell, Children, I wish I could embrace each of you. Let me at least kiss your flag.”

Then he climbed into his berline and leaves for exile.
