THE CANNON OF MONTEREAU

During the campaign of France Napoleon ‘ s army defeats as well the Prussians in the valley of the river Marne as the Austrians-Russians in the valley of the Seine.

Napoleon is everywhere at the same time at the head of his soldiers, escaping hardly from Cossacks ‘ attacks.

On February 18th 1814 during the battle on the Montereau bridge, he can’t hold out against temptation practicing his former talent as an artilleryman.

He personally checks a gun of twelve.

To the soldiers around him he says : “ Come on, friends, don’t worry, the bullet which will kill me is not yet melted.”
