In the beginning, the standard represented the rallying-sign of a Company. As a natural consequence it became a symbol of the whole nation. Vexillology is a very ancient and complicated science, which comes from the roman armies : in front of their columns they were banners names "vexilla" for cavalry units, "aquila" for infantry legions ; the "labarum" was reserved to the Emperor. More ancient peoples identified their troops with colored fabrics or bronze statuettes fastened at the end of the spears. Remaining in our latin culture, where from we got incontestably our military schience, we wee spring up more and more emblems, as well civil, religious, corporative as martial ones.
